THE MOTIVATION-OMETER

CHALLENGE DIFFICULTY MUST MATCH YOUR MOTIVATION LEVEL

How much do you care about this habit? How much does it actually matter to you? Rate yourself on the scale:

1 - I don't really care, I just thought it was a good idea
2 - I'd like to do this habit, but not that fussed to be honest
3 - I like it in theory, but not sure I can be bothered
4 - I can see the value of this habit, it is important to me, I am willing to work but I expect other things will get in the way.
5 - This is very important. It's prominent on my mind, but not in my top 5 list of weekly priorities right now.
6 - It is important to me, I want the change, but I could happily keep skipping along ignoring it to be honest.
7 - THIS MATTERS TO ME. I really want to make this happen. It's important and I really care.
8 - I am particularly motivated to make this happen and impatient to start.
9 - I'll talk about, I'll tell people about it. I'll think about it -- I'll do what it takes. Success at this is important to me!
10 - This is the most important thing in my life right now. I'd give it all and risk it all to make this happen. I'd kick a dog, punch a cat, attack a goat, rob a granny, hide the remote, risk my life, lie to my wife and do whatever else it takes to make this happen.

Motivation / Task match -- If it's the most important thing in the world, you are probably going to find a way. If you don't care, even if you pretend you do -- you ain't getting it done. Spend some time actually connecting with this, you have to get this balance right. If you're lower than a 5, it better be a well planned and very small change or it's unlikely to work. Five to seven and we can be a bit more ambitious, 7-9 and we are in business -- it will still be tricky, but this is where we really want to be as often as possible. If it's a ten, then I hope it's really very important, or I hope that you seek help.
